EDITOR NOTE · Editorial advice, based on public sources
Perplexity is ideal for the first research pass: web search, synthesis, and inline citations are combined to map an unfamiliar topic quickly. It is not a citation-perfect final-answer machine; complex claims still require opening the originals.

Best for
Competitor scans, product research, news and reading leads, and writing preparation where source links must be retained.
Not for
High-stakes legal, medical, or financial final answers, source-free research based only on summaries, or complex document and code editing.
Key capabilities
Web search with inline citations
The official pricing page describes Free as search with accurate answers and citations; each citation should be checked against the page supporting the claim.[1]
Deep Research and model choice
Pro adds Deep Research, preferred-model selection, higher web/file limits, and premium sources such as PitchBook and Statista.[1]
Pricing and free allowance
- Free
- USD 0/month
- Limited daily use, basic models, and citations for simple questions and early research.[1][2]
| Plan | Cost | Includes and terms |
|---|---|---|
| Free | USD 0/month | Limited daily use, basic models, and citations for simple questions and early research.[1][2] |
| Pro | USD 20/month; an individual annual discount was not confirmed on the pages read | Higher web and file limits, Deep Research, preferred models, image/video generation, and advanced models; exact counts appear in the account.[1][3][2] |
| Max (Individual) | The official help page confirms the tier, but the current public help page does not show an individual price; price unverified | Adds higher advanced-model, Research, and Create files/apps access, priority support, and early features on top of Pro for heavy research users.[2][3] |
Limitations to watch
Citations still need originals
Inline citations show the retrieval trail but do not guarantee that qualifiers were preserved; open originals for important numbers, dates, and causal claims.[1]
Editorial workflow: how to try it
Define the research question
State topic, date range, region, and required source types, then ask for a source list first.
Open citations one by one
Map each key claim to the original passage and flag omissions, stale sources, or unsupported sentences.
Export your evidence table
Record URL, publication date, access date, and conclusion; do not treat Perplexity's paragraph as the final draft.
When is it worth paying?
Use Free to validate citation quality and your research process. Upgrade to Pro when daily search, Deep Research, files, or premium databases become constraints; seek Enterprise pricing only for SSO, compliance, no-training commitments, and team governance.
