Claude

A conversational AI suited to long-form work, analysis, and coding

EDITOR NOTE · Editorial advice, based on public sources

Claude is strongest when long source material, code, and complex writing need to stay in one continuing context. Projects, RAG, and Artifacts turn research into editable deliverables, but limits and model access vary by plan, region, and the current product page.

Best for

Long-document research, code explanation and refactoring, iterative plans, and shareable small tools.

Not for

If the work is mainly fast retrieval and opening sources one by one, compare a search entry point such as Perplexity first; it is also not a mature image/video workflow, and generated content still needs verification.

Key capabilities

Projects and knowledge bases

Paid plans can create isolated projects, upload documents or code, and set project instructions. Anthropic says RAG turns on as project knowledge approaches the context limit and can expand capacity by up to 10x. This suits a stable workspace for product material, interviews, and specs.[3][4]

Artifacts as deliverables

Claude can place substantial, self-contained content in a separate pane, including documents, code, single-page HTML, SVG, diagrams, and React components for iteration, reuse, or sharing.[5]

Conversational coding and analysis

Ask Claude to explain material first, then rewrite, decompose, or generate code under constraints. It works best when goal, context, and output format are supplied before iterative verification.[3][5]

Pricing and free allowance

Free
USD 0/month
Limited usage; the current help page positions it for occasional use. Artifacts are available, while Projects/RAG access follows the plan shown on the product page.[2][5]
Pro
USD 20/month; USD 200/year billed annually, about USD 17/month
Standard capacity for regular use; the current price table does not list API credits/bonus capacity on the Pro row, so API eligibility and credits should not be generalized from the Pro subscription.[1][2]
Max 5x / 20x
From USD 100/month; USD 200/month
About 5x and 20x Pro capacity respectively; the current pricing table lists API credits on these Max rows, subject to the footnotes and account conditions. Models, message windows, and API eligibility vary by page and region.[2][1]

Limitations to watch

Usage changes dynamically

Anthropic distinguishes capacity by plan and availability can vary with models and demand; one session's length is not a fixed guarantee.[2][1]

RAG is not lossless memory

RAG expands project knowledge capacity, but retrieved excerpts still need checking when specifications or numeric claims have multiple versions.[4]

Code and facts need acceptance checks

A generated Artifact is not proof of security, deployment, or tests; inspect citations, dependencies, and permissions separately.[5]

Editorial workflow: how to try it

1

Set up project context

Put specs, examples, and goals in one Project and state allowed sources, output structure, and date range.

2

Analyze before producing

Ask Claude to list facts, uncertainties, and gaps before drafting copy, code, or an Artifact.

3

Review the deliverable

Before export, check citations, numbers, code diff, dependencies, and privacy, then save the final version to project documentation.

When is it worth paying?

Run one real long-document task and one coding task on Free first. Upgrade to Pro when usage windows, Projects/RAG, or repeated Artifact work become the bottleneck. Max is for heavy daily parallel use, not occasional questions.

Research note: Read Anthropic's official pricing, plan, Projects, RAG, and Artifacts pages. Current pricing language around API credits/bonus capacity is more nuanced than older material, so API is not described as universally excluded; the account page remains the authority for exact credits.
