ElevenLabs

An AI tool for voiceover, speech generation, and audio experiments

EDITOR NOTE · Editorial advice, based on public sources

A mature voice infrastructure and creator workspace whose strengths are natural TTS, voice cloning, dubbing, and APIs; test a small sample first when authorized, repeatable voice production matters.

Checked: 2026-10-12 · Official site material

Best for

Video narration, course and podcast drafts, multilingual dubbing, voice prototypes, and teams needing API access.

Not for

Unconsented voice cloning, fully offline processing, or permanent exportable voice models.

Key capabilities

Text to speech and multilingual models

Official docs list Eleven v4, v3, Multilingual v2, and Flash v2.5. Flash v2.5 targets roughly 75ms latency and 32 languages, while Multilingual v2 favors stable long-form output. The web flow is text, voice, settings, and generate; the API also supports streaming. These are vendor specifications, so audition target languages and names.[2][3]

Instant and professional voice cloning

Instant Voice Cloning can start from roughly 1–2 minutes of clean audio. Professional Voice Cloning uses longer, higher-quality samples and verification; official guidance gives about 30–180 minutes and warns that noise, reverb, and multiple speakers can be learned too. PVC generally requires Creator or above.[4][5]

Studio, dubbing, and developer API

The Creative workspace covers voiceover, music, sound effects, and related production flows; the API offers REST and Python/TypeScript SDKs. A shared credit pool is spent across TTS, STT, music, effects, and dubbing, so validate the voice in the workspace before integrating a stable flow.[2][1]

Pricing and free allowance

Free
USD 0/month
10,000 credits/month; includes TTS, STT, effects, Voice Design, music, image/video, and 3 Studio projects.[1]
Starter
USD 6/month; page showed USD 1 first-month promotion
30,000 credits/month, commercial license, instant cloning, and 20 projects; promotion is time-limited and should be rechecked.[1]
Creator / Pro
USD 22/month / USD 99/month; annual equivalent about USD 18.33 / USD 82.50 monthly (pay for 10 months)
Creator has 121k credits and PVC; Pro has 600k credits plus 44.1kHz PCM and 192kbps output.[1]

Limitations to watch

Consent and verification are hard constraints

The official flow requires confirmation of rights and consent, with verification for PVC. Keep authorization records and do not assume library voices or another person's recording are freely reusable.[5][4]

Credits are shared and consumed per generation

TTS is roughly character-based while STT, music, effects, and dubbing have separate rates; regenerations may consume credits, and free credits do not roll over.[1]

Input quality affects clone stability

Noise, reverb, compression, multiple speakers, or insufficient accent coverage reduce consistency; official guidance favors clean, single-speaker, consistent recordings.[4]

Editorial workflow: how to try it

1

60-second voiceover check

Use one roughly 60-second script containing amounts, dates, proper names, and mixed Chinese-English. Generate it in v4, Multilingual v2, and Flash, then record errors in numbers, pauses, emotion, and export format.

2

Authorized clone check

Use only an authorized 1–2 minute clean single-speaker recording for IVC and read a new script absent from the sample. Check timbre, accent, and emotion before investing in PVC data.

3

Credit and API check

Generate three clips at the expected monthly character volume and record credits before and after. Run one streaming API request and one retry after a forced failure, checking latency, error handling, and actual charge before choosing a plan.

When is it worth paying?

Start on Free for auditioning; move to Starter for commercial use or instant cloning, and Creator/Pro for PVC, long-form work, or higher quality. Recheck promotion prices and quotas at checkout.
